TRF First Anniversary Newsletter No 4/2010 (September 2010)

Can you believe it has already been a year since The Rosetta Foundation was launched! Last September volunteers, NGO representatives and technology providers from Asia, Africa, Europe and the United States gathered at the University of Limerick, Ireland, for the global launch of The Rosetta Foundation at the Action for Global Information Sharing Conference – AGIS ’09.

For us it was an exciting first year with stumbling blocks as well as successes and a lot of experience gained. We look forward to many years to come!

Also, to begin our second year as The Rosetta Foundation we introduced a new Community Profiles Section to our Newsletter, where we look at why TRF team members enjoy being an active part of our community.

Thank you for your support - we couldn't have done all of this great work without you!

Community Eye Health Journal

The Rosetta Foundation is happy to announce the commencement of a new project with Community Eye Health Journal (CEHJ). CEHJ “addresses the elimination of avoidable blindness and focuses on countries where the burden of preventable blindness is greatest.”
Read more about their initiative on the CEHJ website.
In the last month we recruited eight qualified English to Spanish translators with experience in medical translations. They all went through a screening process and their sample translations have been rated as very high quality by Dr Van C. Lansingh, the editor of the CEHJ Spanish Edition. Amy Moreno, Carlos Garcia, Conchita Chinchilla-Weller, Jose Luis Alvarez, María José Torrillo, María Teresa Jones Acebal, Marisa C. de Nohara, Raquel Luengos and Valeria G. Ricca will support The Rosetta Foundation by donating their time, linguistic skills and know-how and will translate articles from English into Spanish. Together we will support CEHJ in the dissemination of eye health knowledge to regions that rarely receive adequate healthcare information.

Volunteer Profiles

Name: Alexandra Tapia
TRF Role: Volunteer Translator, Spanish to English
"I am a freelance translator English - Spanish and I volunteer because it is a way for me to support and collaborate with fair causes and missions that benefit helpless people around the world. I feel happy to volunteer and give happiness, support and hope through my work."
Name: Carla Costa
TRF Role: Volunteer Translator, Portuguese to English
“The first reason for becoming a volunteer is solidarity. The best way to put this into practice is by devoting some of my time to others and helping them to overcome some of their difficulties and also by providing an answer to specific needs. By collaborating with The Rosetta Foundation, I’m contributing to the accomplishment of its mission. It is my strongest belief that if we want a better society, we must, as citizens and to the best of our efforts, contribute to it. As a native Portuguese translator, I expect to contribute to the elimination of language and cultural barriers, by making information accessible to millions of people all over the world whose mother tongue is Portuguese.”
Staff Profile

Name: Joanna Spalding
TRF Role: PR and Operations Intern
"Working with an NPO has been a long term goal of mine. After moving from the US to Germany and then Ireland, I have become very familiar with cross cultural interactions and language barriers. I am happy to aid in lessening the difficulties experienced by people who speak less common languages than English. Everyone has equal right to education and knowledge and I am incredibly lucky to work with The Rosetta Foundation to extend this right to all languages."
