Localisation Project of Anhalt University of Applied Sciences - The Rosetta Website Goes Multilingual

The website of the Rosetta Foundation has taken the first steps towards multilinguality. Eleven students of the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences started translating the website content into their mother tongues: German, Polish, Moroccan Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Bahasa Indonesia and Turkish. Anhalt University, based in the small city of Köthen (Germany) is the only German university offering BA and MA degrees in software localisation. Stefanie Geldbach, who supervised the localisation project, participated in the Action Week of Global Information Sharing (AGIS ‘09) where she learned about the aims of Rosetta Foundation. “The work of the Rosetta Foundation raises the awareness for the tranlations needs of NGOs or humanitiarian organisations, something which is rarely discussed in the classroom,” explains Stefanie Geldbach. “Anhalt University attracts students from all over the world and my classes are made up of students of an international background. The localisation of the Rosetta website offered my students an ideal opportunity to gain more experience translating into their mother tongue and to broaden their perspective on issues such as crowdsourcing and volunteer translating”. Therefore she suggested to Reinhard Schäler to set up a localisation project for her BA students which took place in winter semester 2009. The following students contributed to this project: Tobias Heinze and Steffen Schwenckner (German), Beata Kozielska and Paweł Rac (Polish), Adil Khabar (Arabic), Thania Parmadi (Indonesian), Li Shaofang, Hu Wupeng, Rong Shaohua and Hou Xu (Simplified Chinese) and Abdullah Polat (Turkish). Abdullah Polat was further supported by Arev Babahan and Merve Toksoy from the university Mainz-Germersheim.

Recently, the Rosetta Foundation has relaunched its website. Multilingual information remains a key issue.
